Open Call for Submissions
We invite young artists, writers, and playwrights to submit original works that reflect on racial issues in America today, in conversation with the art and legacy of The Crisis magazine. Selected works will be featured in the gallery exhibition, live performances, and a commemorative publication. We’re seeking fresh perspectives from a new generation of creators. Voices that challenge, reimagine, and push the dialogue forward.

November 10, 2025 marked the 115th anniversary of the NAACP's journal The Crisis founded by W.E.B. DuBois.
2026 In Crisis is a powerful, immersive performance event that explores the struggles, triumphs, and voices of the present through the lens of early African American literature and visual art. Inspired by the formative years of The Crisis magazine, the event centers on a full performance of Georgia Douglas Johnson’s groundbreaking anti-lynching play Safe, staged as an intimate, up-close theatrical experience. The performance is followed by a moderated discussion of the work of John Henry Adams, Jr., an illustrator for The Crisis whose striking imagery appeared on early magazine covers and in influential political cartoons. The evening concludes with food and conversation, inviting continued reflection and community dialogue. Hosted by the Department of Theatre and Communication Studies at Clark Atlanta University during Black History Month, 2026 in Crisis bridges generations by illuminating how the themes and questions raised in these historical works remain urgently relevant today.
